Blooming Sustainable Fashion
vcu fashion sustainability week
The Ask:
Create a week full of campus events for VCU students focusing on fashion sustainability. Create a logo, itinerary and budget for this week. Make sure it engages students, while spreading knowledge about sustainable fashion.
The gain:
Throughout this project, I gained valuable insight into the intricacies of planning and executing events tailored to student engagement. Our team created a week-long series of events focusing on fashion sustainability. Central to our initiative was the aim to educate students about the detrimental environmental impacts of the fashion industry. In navigating this task, I collaborated closely with local vendors to correctly assess costs associated with each event. It was imperative for us to prioritize sourcing from local vendors in Richmond, thereby championing and supporting small businesses within our community.
Taking on a pivotal role within the project, I assumed responsibility for various key tasks. I created and designed the event logo, ensuring it encapsulated our sustainability ethos effectively as well as our slogan “blooming sustainable fashion”. Additionally, I meticulously crafted the event schedule, strategically coordinating each activity to maximize engagement and impact. Collaborating closely with my colleague, Jayla, I actively contributed to ongoing research efforts aimed at identifying innovative elements to enhance our sustainability week offerings. This project not only honed my event planning skills but also deepened my appreciation for the intersection of sustainability and community engagement.
Slogan:

week of Events:
I worked with Jala Byrd, and Amani Kamanzi to create a sustainability week for VCU. We choose a week of events that consisted of sustainable fashion activities leading up to 2023’s Earth day. We came up with ideas for Monday through Friday, including shopping students second hand clothing, handing out florals with information on fashion sustainability, and a movie night showing The True Cost in Monroe Park. To make it as accessible to students, all events were planned to be campus, free of cost.
